Senior Guest House
Senior Guest House at Fairhill (SGH) is a home for temporarily displaced older adults. Residents are older adults 60+, used to living independently and in urgent need of short term residential placement. Approximately 80% are City of Cleveland residents and almost all are economically disadvantaged. Guests come via multiple referrals (Cleveland Department on Aging - court-ordered evictions/public health department condemnations; Cuyahoga County Department of Senior and Adult Services - adult protective services unit; Benjamin Rose - home care services; the Veteran’s Administration; the Red Cross; the Cleveland Police Department and other agencies; and some family/self referrals).
Most Senior Guest House referrals share three characteristics:
- extreme social isolation – lack of functional family/friend social network
- lack of system negotiation skills needed to find and secure new housing
- need for remedial medical care and an advocate to connect them with resources and benefits
Over 130 older persons have benefited from direct services at the Senior Guest House - the only elder shelter facility in Northeast Ohio.
